What are the features and benefits of being part of SUWS?

The Club has two active projects.

G3KMI is the University Amateur Radio Club. Amateur Radio is a hobby that involves using high-power radio communication equipment to talk to people that could be on the other side of the world. You can build and modify your own kit and even send TV pictures!

SOWN (Southampton Open Wireless Network) is a Wireless Networking project which aims to build a free-to-use wireless network in Southampton, UK. Current activities include IPv6 and 802.1x deployment on our Community-Wide WiFi network as well as VoIP and Mesh networking.

What are the development outcomes from being part of SUWS? (you can simply list 2-4 things)

From the amateur radio side there is the option to become a licensed radio operator for which we run regular exams. There is also the option to participate in international radio competitions and other events. From the SOWN side it is a great opportunity to learn an experiment with wireless network technologies and other networking systems.

Can only ECS students join the society?

While the majority of our members are from ECS we have many from other departments and even outside the uni as well.

Is it affiliated with SUSU/National Scheme?

We are affiliated with SUSU and the RSGB (Radio Society of Great Britain) Our SOWN project is also affiliated with Janet (the UK academic network provider) as part of their Eduroam scheme

What types of roles can a student occupy withing the society? (president, treasurer etc...)

Our 2014-2015 Committee has the following roles.

• Social Secretary
• Webmaster

Do you meet on campus? (If yes what building/room)

We meet in Zepler CLS on Thursday evenings from 18:00. There are meetings every first and third Thursdays the other Thursdays are activity evenings so we might be operating or doing other activities elsewhere.

Can all year students join?

Any student including masters and postgraduate students, staff and even non students can join and get involved.

Is it only during term time that things are happening in the society?

no we still meet during the summer

How many hours per week do you devote to it?

This is incredibly variable, some of our members only turn up for occasional meetings and events whereas other are very active in the club and can many hours a week doing radio activities.

Is there a capacity to the society?

no, there is no limit on the amount of people who can join

Are there any prerequisites to join?

no, there are no perquisites

Are any of the roles paid?

no, Although we have had ECS sponsored intern-ships in the past

What would be an interesting fact about the society?

SUWS is one of the oldest continuously running society's in the University. In addition we are responsible for over 1% of all radio licencing exam passes across UK since 2012.

Do you involve alumni in any way?

Many alumni are still active members of the society in addition we are still in contact with many of the societies alumni even back to those from the early days of the club

Is there any recognition of the achievements/contributions that members of the society make?

Several of our members have received awards for achievements in radio competitions. In addition some of the wireless networking research by the sown project is now in widespread use
